3D scanning and 3D printing of human hand replicas

We’re always happy to help bring our clients’ diverse projects to life. This time, Headex Group approached us with a unique idea: to produce oversized, 50 cm hand replicas using 3D printing for a conference, where they became an unusual and engaging attraction.

The main idea behind the project was to create an enlarged, 50 cm replica based on a 3D model of a real human hand, print it using a 3D printer, and professionally finish it to ensure the final result was not only impressive in size but also aesthetically refined and presentable.

Production process: from 3D scanning a real hand to 3D printing

At the beginning of the project, we scanned our colleague’s hand using the advanced Artec Leo 3D scanner. This scanner enables fast and highly accurate digitisation of various surfaces and objects, including body parts and even the entire human body. In this case, the 3D scanning of the hand took just one minute.

The scan data was processed and prepared for further 3D model development. We enlarged the model to 50 cm and split it into two parts to make it suitable for 3D printing.

3D printing and post-processing

Both parts of the 3D model were printed using ABS plastic, selected for its good mechanical strength and suitability for further surface finishing. After printing, the parts were glued together, and the surface was carefully finished and prepared for painting. In the final stage, the 3D model was painted and lacquered to achieve a smooth and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

Total project duration: 1.5 weeks

The entire process – from the initial idea, 3D scanning and model preparation to 3D printing, finishing and painting – was completed in just 1.5 weeks.

This project demonstrates how 3D scanning and 3D printing make it possible to accurately transfer a real object into the digital space, change its scale and manufacture a product of the desired size based on the resulting 3D model.

The final result was also very well received by the client:

“I’m delighted to share that the hands received so many compliments and so much admiration 🙂 Thank you for bringing the vision to life so beautifully and delivering such great quality.”

This project demonstrates how 3D scanning and 3D printing can accurately transfer a real object into the digital space, adjust its scale and produce an item of the desired size based on the resulting 3D model. It is also a great example of how 3D technologies can be used not only for practical, manufacturing and industrial applications but also to bring creative and unexpected ideas to life.
